Email marketing
Klaviyo — The industry standard for Shopify email. Deep integration with Shopify allows segmentation by purchase history, browsing behavior, and order value. The abandoned cart, post-purchase, and welcome sequence automations are excellent. Free up to 250 contacts; pricing scales with list size. Worth the cost once you're past 500+ subscribers.
Mailchimp — A simpler, lower-cost alternative that covers the basics well. Less powerful segmentation than Klaviyo, but sufficient for most stores that are just starting with email. The Shopify integration is solid.
Omnisend — Strong option for sellers who want email and SMS marketing in one platform. Free tier is generous and the automations are well-designed.
Reviews and social proof
Judge.me — The best value in reviews apps. A generous free tier includes unlimited review requests, photo reviews, and basic widgets. The paid plan ($15/month) adds Google Shopping review integration and advanced customization. Most stores can run on the free tier indefinitely.
Stamped.io — More feature-rich than Judge.me, with better analytics, UGC features, and loyalty integration. Higher cost ($19+/month), but worth it for stores where reviews are a primary conversion driver.
Loox ($9.99+/month) — Specializes in photo and video reviews with a beautiful display widget. Particularly effective for lifestyle products where visual social proof matters.
SEO
Plug In SEO (free + paid from $20/month) — Scans your store for SEO issues and provides actionable fixes. Useful for identifying missing meta tags, broken links, slow pages, and structured data problems. The free tier covers basic auditing.
SEO King (~$19/month) — Bulk meta tag editing, image alt text optimization, and JSON-LD schema generation. Saves significant time versus editing each page manually.
For most SEO work, the combination of well-written content (no app needed) and Google Search Console (free) covers more ground than any Shopify SEO app. Apps help with auditing and bulk updates, but they don't replace good content.
Upsells and conversion
ReConvert ($4.99+/month) — Specializes in post-purchase upsells and thank-you page customization. One of the highest-ROI apps for AOV improvement once your store has consistent traffic.
Frequently Bought Together (~$9.99/month) — Amazon-style "frequently bought together" recommendations on product pages. Drives add-to-cart rates and average order value effectively.
Wait to install upsell apps until your store has consistent monthly traffic and sales. Upsell apps have no impact if you have no visitors to convert.
Analytics and tracking
Google Analytics 4 (GA4)— Free and essential. Install GA4 via the Google & YouTube sales channel in Shopify. Tracks all traffic sources, user behavior, conversion funnels, and revenue attribution.
Hotjar (free tier, paid from $39/month) — Session recordings and heatmaps show you how visitors actually use your store. Invaluable for identifying where buyers drop off and why conversion rates are lower than expected.
Shopify's built-in analytics are useful for surface-level monitoring (revenue, orders, conversion rate) but limited for deep analysis. GA4 + Shopify's native reports covers most small stores adequately.
The right time to add apps
Install apps when you have a specific problem they solve — not speculatively. A reviews app is worth installing from day one (you'll always want to collect reviews). An email marketing app is essential from day one. But an upsell app installed when you're getting 5 orders per month generates almost no ROI and adds page load weight.
Review your installed apps every 60–90 days. Cancel any that you can't directly attribute revenue to. $50/month in apps that aren't driving measurable results is $600/year of pure overhead.
